The Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism was formed in 1986 as the Office on Volunteerism. It was placed under the Office of the Lieutenant Governor in January 1997 and renamed the Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism in 1998 (Chapter 22, Acts of 1998).
The Office provides support for volunteer programs in public and private agencies throughout Maryland (Chapter 13, Acts of 1986). The Office provides information and referrals to individuals and program staff; sponsors conferences and workshops for administrators, staff, and volunteers; and coordinates recognition events and award ceremonies. The Office also administers the Volunteer Maryland Program, a National Community Service Demonstration Project (Code State Government Article, secs. 9-1301 through 9-1310).
VOLUNTEER MARYLAND
Volunteer Maryland recruits coordinators and associates who dedicate a year of public service to Volunteer Maryland. After training in volunteer management and empowerment techniques, teams of coordinators and associates are placed in government and private nonprofit agencies to strengthen their volunteer programs.
